Clinical governance is an umbrella term. It covers activities that help sustain and improve high standards of patient care. Nursing staff may already be familiar with some of these activities, quality and safety improvement, for example.

What is different is the effort to bind these activities together and make them more effective. Clinical governance enables healthcare professionals to reduce clinical risks, enhance clinical quality via the application of evidence-based practice and deliver good quality care/5(5). Shared governance models were introduced to improve nurses’ work environment, satisfaction, and retention. Clinical governance (CG) is an organisation-wide approach to continuous improvement of healthcare quality by all the individuals who are involved in a patient's care.
